What does this mean?

The new Callaway JAWS MD5 wedges have been designed to increase spin and versatility around the greens. Roger Cleveland, one of the most renowned wedge designers in the world, made several key changes from the MD4 wedges while maintaining the same look and feel that has made Callaway wedges so successful. The new JAWS MD5 wedges include five different sole grind options to suit various types of golfers. The C-Grind is a low-bounce option that works best for golfers that like to play-open faced shots and have a shallower angle of attack. The S-Grind is a mid-bounce option with moderate heel relief to promote open-faced shots, best for medium angles of attack. Meanwhile, the X-Grind features a narrow, high-bounce crescent sole that promotes versatility for steep swingers. The original W-Grind is a high-bounce sole with generous front-to-back camber that prevents digging for golfers with steep angles of attack. Finally, the new low-bounce W-Grind was built based on feedback from tour professionals that delivers increased playability around the greens while still allowing players to employ the sole’s entire bounce on full swings.

The Tech Story

Cleveland and his Callaway R&D team have implemented a radical change to the construction of the grooves in order to optimize spin from all types of lies. The new proprietary JAWS MD5 grooves are designed to a 37-degree wall angle, a drastic change from the 5-degree wall used in the MD4 wedges. This increases the groove-edge sharpness and allows the clubface to grab the ball and generate spin like never before. According to Callaway, the JAWS grooves are especially effective from within 80 yards and will produce that one-hop-and-stop trajectory that so many golfers prefer. Callaway also included its patented Groove-in-Groove technology into the JAWS MD5 wedges. Groove-in-Groove technology consists of milled micro-positive grooves that are positioned in the flat parts of the face for added surface roughness and grip. This creates more contact points between the ball and the clubface, which results in more spin. Each JAWS groove has been rendered to the tightest tolerances Callaway has ever achieved in wedge grooves, promoting consistent spin rates from shot to shot. Additionally, each JAWS MD5 wedge is constructed from 8620 mild carbon steel for exceptional feel, while the center of gravity in each different grind and loft is placed perfectly to create the ideal performance and feel. Lastly, the Callaway used optimized head progression to build traditional lob and sand wedge shapes into the higher lofts and compact, player-preferred designs in the gap and pitching wedges to create a smooth transition into an iron set.
