Description
William Winton
Montrose / London
Spending the early days of his career in Australia, William Winton was a pro in London at East Finchley and Acton between 1897 and 1909 then acting as manager for Frank Johnson's clubmaking business. He established his own clumaking firm, W.M. Winton and Co., in 1910 and later took over his father, James's, firm in Montrose (run by William’s brother Robert) and merged it with his own, while continuing to maintain a London office in Hemp Row into the 1920s.
The Montrose facilities were greatly extended, beginning in November 1913, with a new 130'x 36'workshop added next to the existing one and 100' sheds for the storage of wood built.
The advertisement is from 1921. Ironically the ribbed clubs would be delivered just in time to be banned for the following season!
He died at his home in Montrose on 16 October 1931.
